Old Pension Scheme (UPS/OPS) vs New Pension System (NPS)

Government employees hired before and after 2004 fall under different pension schemes. Understanding the difference is crucial for retirement planning:

Feature Old Pension Scheme (OPS/UPS) New Pension System (NPS)
Applicable To Employees hired before 2004 Employees hired after 2004
Pension Type Defined Benefit (Fixed pension for life) Defined Contribution (Based on investment growth)
Contribution No employee contribution (Employer/Government funded) 10–11% of Basic Pay mandatory
Government Co-contribution N/A (100% by government) 14% of Basic Pay (government match)
Pension Amount 50% of last basic salary per month (fixed for life) Depends on corpus accumulated & withdrawal strategy
Family Pension 50% of employee's pension to spouse/eligible dependents Depends on NPS portfolio balance at death
Inflation Protection Yes – DA/Dearness Relief applicable on pension No – Fixed withdrawal amount (unless market grows)
Flexibility Low – Fixed terms by government High – Choice of fund allocation, withdrawal strategy
Life Expectancy Risk Borne by government (pension for life) Borne by employee (must plan corpus usage)
Tax Benefits Limited (80C not applicable) Full 80C deduction + 80CCD(1b) extra ₹50,000
Investment Returns N/A (not applicable) Depends on chosen fund allocation (typically 6–8% p.a.)
💡 Key Point: Old Pension Scheme (OPS) provides more security due to guaranteed fixed pension & inflation protection. NPS offers flexibility and tax benefits but requires better financial planning. Your scheme depends on your recruitment date (before/after Jan 1, 2004).
