What is the CAIIB exam?
CAIIB is conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), Mumbai. It is the second step after JAIIB in IIBF’s flagship qualification for bankers. JAIIB builds the foundation — economy, banking practice, accounting and retail banking — and CAIIB takes you to management level: bank management and statistics, treasury and forex, financial management, banking law, and one specialisation of your choice.
The exam is held twice a year, online, in English or Hindi. You can attempt all five papers together or spread them over attempts, because every paper you pass is kept as a credit.

Passing rules and credits — explained simply
- Route 1 — paper by paper: score 50 or more in a paper and it is passed for good (as a credit).
- Route 2 — aggregate: if you write all papers in one attempt and score at least 45 in each with a 50% total, you pass the whole exam even if some papers are below 50.
- Credits: next time, register only for the papers you have not cleared.
- Deadline: all papers must be cleared within 5 attempts or 3 years from your first registration. After that, credits lapse and you start again.
Tip: write all five papers in your first attempt. Only then is the aggregate route open to you, and a strong paper can pull a weak one over the line.

How to prepare for CAIIB while working full-time
A 12-week plan
- Weeks 1–3 — ABM. Start with statistics; it rewards daily practice. Then HRM and credit management chapters.
- Weeks 4–6 — BFM. Forex and treasury numericals first, then risk management and ALM. Keep a formula notebook.
- Weeks 7–8 — ABFM. Capital budgeting, cost of capital and valuation problems; then the management chapters.
- Weeks 9–10 — BRBL and your elective. BRBL is fact-based: one summary sheet per Act. Read the elective unit by unit.
- Weeks 11–12 — mocks and revision. One full mock every two days, timed at 2 hours. Review every wrong answer and revise weak units.
Paper-wise tips
- ABM: Statistics (sampling, correlation, regression, time series, probability) is pure numericals — practise them daily. Credit appraisal ratios and working-capital assessment also carry calculations.
- BFM: The most numerical paper: forward rates, cross rates, swap points, duration, VaR and ALM gaps. Learn the formula sheet first, then solve case sets under time.
- ABFM: Capital budgeting (NPV, IRR, payback), cost of capital, leverage and valuation are numerical-heavy; management theory needs crisp definitions.
- BRBL: Mostly conceptual. Make a one-page sheet per Act: purpose, key sections, time limits and amounts. Revise these sheets repeatedly in the last two weeks.
Habits that work for bankers
- Study unit by unit, test unit by unit. Take a short test right after each unit — it shows what did not stick.
- Do numericals by hand. Reading a solved example is not the same as solving it under time.
- Read case studies carefully. Many questions hang on one figure or condition inside the case.
- Use small daily slots. 45–60 minutes after office, plus longer weekend sessions, beats occasional all-nighters.
- Attempt every question. There is no negative marking.
Advantages of passing CAIIB
Recognised qualification
CAIIB is the banking industry’s own professional certification, widely valued across public and private sector banks.
Pay and career
Many banks give additional increments or a one-time incentive, and consider CAIIB in promotions, as per their service rules. Check your bank’s circular.
Better at your job
Credit appraisal, forex, treasury, ALM and banking law are daily work for managers — CAIIB gives you the full picture.
Confidence in interviews
Promotion interviews and internal tests often draw on the same topics.
Path to specialisation
Your elective — risk, HR, rural banking, central banking or IT — builds depth in one area.
Credits stay with you
Papers you pass are kept, so you can clear CAIIB at your own pace within the time limit.

Frequently asked questions
Who can appear for the CAIIB exam?
Ordinary members of IIBF whose membership subscription is not in arrears and who have passed JAIIB (or Part I of the Associate Examination) can register for CAIIB.
What is the CAIIB exam pattern?
CAIIB has five papers: four compulsory papers (ABM, BFM, ABFM, BRBL) and one elective. Each paper is an online objective test of 100 questions for 100 marks in 2 hours, with no negative marking. Questions include knowledge, concept, problem-solving and case-based questions.
What are the passing marks for CAIIB?
You pass a paper by scoring at least 50 out of 100 in it. You also pass the whole exam if you score at least 45 in each paper and at least 50% in aggregate across all papers in a single attempt. Papers you pass are kept as credits for your later attempts.
How many attempts are allowed for CAIIB?
You must clear all papers within five attempts or three years from your first registration, whichever is earlier. Registering for an attempt counts as an attempt even if you do not appear.
Is there negative marking in CAIIB?
No. There is no negative marking, so attempt every question.
Which CAIIB elective should I choose?
Pick the elective closest to your work. Branch and agriculture-lending officers often find Rural Banking familiar, HR and administration staff choose HRM, and treasury or risk staff choose Risk Management. The elective counts like any other paper, so choose the one you can score well in.
How many months does CAIIB preparation take?
Most working bankers need about 3 to 4 months of steady study — around 1 to 1.5 hours on weekdays and longer sessions at weekends — to cover all five papers with practice and revision.
What are the benefits of passing CAIIB?
CAIIB is a recognised professional qualification for bankers. Many banks give additional increments or a one-time incentive and count it in promotion assessments, as per their own service rules — check your bank’s circular for the exact benefit.
Can I try Arthzo’s CAIIB course before buying?
Yes. The Unit 1 notes and unit test of every subject are free for everyone, without logging in.
