Education Loan Documents Required: Complete Checklist
Keep these documents ready to speed up sanction and avoid the most common cause of delay — incomplete paperwork.
Quick Answer
You’ll need the student’s KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, passport for abroad), the admission letter & fee structure, academic mark sheets, co-applicant income proof (salary slips, Form 16, ITR), 6-month bank statements, photographs, and — for loans above ₹7.5 lakh — collateral/property documents.
1. Student documents
- Aadhaar card and PAN card
- Passport (mandatory for abroad studies)
- Admission / offer letter from the institute
- Detailed fee structure / cost of study
- Entrance exam scorecard (JEE, NEET, GMAT, GRE, etc.)
- Passport-size photographs
- Visa and I-20 / CAS letter (overseas courses)
2. Academic documents
- Class 10 mark sheet & certificate
- Class 12 mark sheet & certificate
- Graduation / last qualifying exam mark sheets (for PG courses)
- Gap certificate, if there is a study break
3. Parent / co-applicant documents
- KYC — Aadhaar, PAN, address proof
- Passport-size photographs
- Relationship proof with the student
- Statement of assets & liabilities
4. Income proof
Salaried co-applicant
- Last 3 months’ salary slips
- Form 16 of the last 2 years
- 6-month salary account statement
Self-employed co-applicant
- Last 2 years’ ITR with computation

5. KYC & admission proof
Banks complete KYC using Aadhaar and PAN for both student and co-applicant. Admission proof — the offer/admission letter plus the official fee structure — establishes the loan amount, since funds are usually disbursed directly to the institution. For PM Vidyalaxmi, Aadhaar is mandatory and documents are uploaded on the portal.
6. Collateral documents (loans above ₹7.5 lakh)
- Property title deeds and chain documents
- Approved building plan / valuation report
- Legal clearance / encumbrance certificate
- FD receipts, LIC policies, NSC/KVP (if pledged)

The core list is similar, but each bank may add forms. Always check the specific lender's checklist — see our SBI, HDFC and ICICI guides.

Yes. A passport is only mandatory for abroad education loans.
What if I have an education gap?
Submit a gap certificate explaining the break (work, exam preparation, medical). Banks accept reasonable, documented gaps.
